Sail Our Boats

We have a robust fleet of sailing dinghies and six keelboats. We also have 8 Paddle Boards and 10 Kayaks.

Full use of our dinghies, kayaks and paddle boards is included with your membership fee.

An additional $150/week charge is required to sail our Colgate 26 Keelboats ($600/Summer, $200/Island Members). Users must complete a simple checkout comprising basic theory, rigging, and simple maneuvers to ensure their capability (included with the fee).

We offer a 2-day competency program and private sailing lessons to members and non-members.

Colgate 26s

These boats are perfect for exploring the Great Salt Pond, joining in Thursday Night Racing or even a relaxing cruise.

The boats are both spacious and dry and comfortably fit 6 adults. With plenty of storage space, an onboard picnic is most certainly an option! They are equipped with main and jib. Spinnakers are available on request There are 6 Colgates for members’ use.

Sunfish

The Sunfish sailboat is a personal size, beach-launched sailing dinghy. Their simple rig makes them the ideal boat for any ability and the perfect vessel to explore the Great Salt Pond! There are 6 Sunfish for members’ use.

International 420 Dinghy

The Club 420 is the base of many North American local, high school, and collegiate programs. Simple and safe for beginning sailors yet challenging enough for collegiate champions, the C420 offers more learning opportunities than any other double-handed boat in North America. Over 7,000 Club 420s are in youth programs throughout the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. There are eight 420s for members’ use.

Laser

The Laser is one of the most popular single-handed dinghies in the world. As of 2012, there are more than 200,000 boats worldwide. A commonly cited reason for its popularity is that it is robust and simple to rig and sail, in addition to its durability. The Laser also provides competitive racing due to the tight class association controls, which eliminate differences in hull, sails, and equipment. There are 2 Lasers for members’ use.

Topaz Taz

The Taz is an open-hulled boat with two sails. Either one adult or two children can sail the Taz. Given its shape, the boat can be quickly righted if capsized and is self-bailing. The Taz has a simple rigging system and is ready to sail in minutes. With space for two children, it is ideal for learning new skills and for exploring Block Island by water. There are 6 Taz for members’ use.

Optimist Dinghies

Optimists are used for beginners. Many sailors continue to race them up to 12 to 13 years of age. The age limit is 15. Young children are sometimes "doubled up," but usually, the boats are single-handers. Children gain confidence and improved skills in this mode: "The small boats train the champs" Many sailing schools and yacht clubs own a number of them, and they are the first boat most beginners will sail. There are 12 Optimists for members’ use.
